Why
You Should Know the Top U.S. Markets for Models
As
a model, you should always be aware of the geographical
areas that have the most demand for models. Also, depending
on what kind of modeling you want to do, knowing your
market is very important. For example, in New York,
there is always plenty of work available for editorial,
runway and catalog models.
However, in Phoenix you may be limited to a certain
type of market and certain types of work-- mainly catalog
work. This is not to say that Phoenix doesn't have opportunities
for runway models, but again, if that's what you're
looking to focus on you may want to consider checking
out the New York or LA markets.
Below is a listing of some of the major markets in the
U.S. including what they're known for, in terms of modeling
opportunities:
- Boston:
Catalog
- Chicago:
Catalog, Advertising, TV
- Dallas:
Catalog
-
Houston: Catalog
- Los
Angeles: Catalog, Editorial, TV
-
Miami: Catalog
-
New York: Advertising, Runway, Catalog, Editorial
-
Phoenix: Catalog
- San
Francisco: Catalog
- Washington,
DC: Catalog
While
the above cities are considered big or major markets,
this doesn't mean there aren't good modeling opportunities
available in your local area. In fact, models are always
needed in every part of the US to do assignments for
local retail stores, clubs, outlets and the like.
A
good rule of thumb is to try to break into the modeling
industry at the local level-- in your home town, where
you stand a better chance of hooking up with an agency
that will represent you. And it's sure to give you good
experience. Then go for the big markets.
Now
of course you can do it the other way around as well.
Your ambition can take you as far as you want to go.
In fact, some of today's top models aimed big and made
it big.
